In an ideal factory, the production lines and machines operate 100 % of the time, at 100 % of their name plate speed and produce 100% quality products. Unfortunately, in practice this rarely happens. The difference between the ideal and reality are called machine losses.

Measuring machine losses and visualizing them provides a basis for effective improvement. OEE is a simple way to mesure and analyze 6 core machine losses. A successful improvement process frequently starts with measuring the OEE.
